Numerous inductees to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame played a role in #FLCivilRights. The “Highwaymen” were a loosely associated group of young African-American artists living in the Fort Pierce area during the late 1950s. Alfred Hair is considered to have originated this style after being taught to paint by A.E. “Bean” Backus, a well-trained white artist who did not share the dominant segregationist views of the time. Today, Florida Highwaymen paintings are widely sought by collectors all over the world.
